How Many Points are Required for Canada Permanent Residence Visas?

Canada permanent residence visa can be obtained via express entry program. It is a point-based program where candidates’ profiles are ranked based on the points that are awarded to them based on various selection factors. Those selection factors are:

  • Age
  • Language Proficiency
  • Adaptability
  • Educational Qualifications
  • Arranged Employment
  • Work Experience

Points awarded on these factors determine the rank of the candidate’s profile in Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

67 Points System

Express entry program that was introduced in January 2015 is one of the most favoured immigration programs among the international communities. Now in order to qualify for the immigration process in Canada, candidates need to score 67 points out of 100 based on these factors.

  • Arranged Employment
    If the candidate is able to get a job-offer from an eligible employer of the country, they are awarded with 10 additional points. There is only one condition that needs to be fulfilled. Job-offered must be categorized under NOC skill level O, A or B.
  • Adaptability
    If the candidate is migrating to Canada with a spouse or common law-partner, they are awarded with 10 additional points. Spouse or common law-partner is also evaluated based on their age, language ability, education and work experience. Candidate can also get additional points if they have a blood relative living in Canada.

In case the candidate is not able to meet the required criteria they can always go for improving their scores. Tips to improve their scores are as follows:

  • Candidates can always go to improve their language proficiency. Language proficiency is proved via taking an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination. For express entry program CLB level 7 is required. If candidate can improve on that and is able to score CLB 10, they can be awarded with 24 points that are maximum for language proficiency.
  • In educational qualifications, if the candidate has done degree of Master’s level they are awarded with maximum points available. Candidates who have not done master’s can always go to pursue the same.
  • Candidates can always go to gather more work experience. Work experience of 6 years awards the candidates with maximum points in this category.
